Internet Security
Internet security
We take Internet security very seriously and are constantly looking at ways to enhance protection of our customers. However, we recommend that you take steps to ensure your own security, for example by:
1. Running windows update regularly
Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com at least weekly to make sure that your operating system is updated with all the latest security features from Microsoft. Mac users should run the Mac Update software feature of OSX.
2. Installing a firewall
Hardware firewalls can be purchased from around £35 plus VAT and provide maximum protection, however software firewalls such as Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com) provide just as good a level of security.
3. Running spyware prevention software
Your machine may be already infected with software that runs in the background and allows it to be used for malicious means or to report information back to companies about your surfing habits (known as spy ware). Software such as Adaware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware) or Spybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/) are free for personal use and will scan your machine for this unwanted software and remove it for you.
4. Downloading and installing anti-virus software
Various software packages are available through the Internet and most are free to home users, for example AVG from Grisoft (http://free.grisoft.com) offers a free for personal use version of their software which does real-time scanning of all your incoming and outgoing emails.
5. Downloading and installing a pop-up blocker programme
An example of this can be found at http://www.stopzilla.com. This is a very effective piece of software and can be tailored to suit your needs.
6. Disconnecting any telephone connection to your PC when not in use
Your Wight Broadband Internet connection does not require a telephone line. However, if you do need to connect a phone line to your PC, for example for fax use, be sure to remove it as soon as you have finished preventing fraudulent software connecting your PC to premium rate phone lines without your knowledge.
These simple guidelines will minimise your risk from fraud and virus-related problems. Your PC supplier will also be able to offer advice on security issues.
Please note that the sites mentioned above are not the only sources of such software and are given as examples only.
